PGA BMW Championship Odds, Betting Preview: Tony Finau Could Thrive At High Altitude

The first phase of the PGA Tour Playoffs is in the books and now the top 50 players in the FedEx Cup standings will do battle this week at the BMW Championship, hosted by Castle Pines Golf Club in Colorado.

Once again, Scottie Scheffler is the favourite this week with odds around +350 depending on the online sportsbook. He’s first in the FedEx Cup standings and already a lock to claim a berth in next week’s Tour Championship that will see the top 30 golfers in the standings do battle for a $25-million payout for first place.

Scottie Scheffler to win the BMW Championship

+350

Hideki Matsuyama (+1800 to win the BMW Championship), claimed the win in the opener of the FedEx Cup Playoffs with a score of 17-under par last weekend. He had odds as long as +2500 to win outright.

Three Canadians survived the cut down to 50 players in the field, but Mackenzie Hughes and Nick Taylor will not be moving on in the Playoffs.

Canadians in the field

Corey Conners (+4500 @ bet365 to win): Conners is coming off a T50 finish at the St. Jude last week and enters the event 33rd in the FedEx Cup rankings. That means he’s got some work to do this weekend in order to qualify for the Tour Championship next week by cracking the top 30 in the rankings. His last two tournaments haven’t been great, so it’ll be a struggle the rest of the way to get his game back on track.

Taylor Pendrith (+8000 @ NorthStar Bets to win): Pendrith, who is the top Canadian in the FedEx Cup standings sitting in 27th, will also need a strong showing this week in order to punch his ticket to the Tour Championship. He’s in good form, finishing T22 last week after posting a pair of fifth-place finishes.

Adam Hadwin (+15000 @ Bet99 to win): Hadwin won’t be happy with his T50 finish last week at the St. Jude, as he now sits 42nd in the FedEx Cup standings. He’ll need an incredibly strong result this week in order to qualify for next week’s finale. The British Columbia native has struggled down the stretch this season, failing to post a top-25 result in his last seven events.

Three golfers to back

Tony Finau (+3300 @ NorthStar Bets): Keep an eye on Finau in this event with it being relatively in his own backyard. A Utah native that has lots of experience playing mountain golf, Finau is very accustomed to playing at high altitude, a distinct advange he has over the rest of the field in Colorado this week. Not only that, Finau is playing some exceptional golf lately, finishing in the top 20 in seven of his last eight events, including three top-10 results. He’s 14th in the FedEx Cup standings heading into this event, and cracking the top 10 heading into the Tour Championship would help him with a better starting position in the season finale.

Sam Burns (+3500 @ bet365): Burns was one of our golfers to back in last week’s preview of the St. Jude, and he impressed with a T5 finish. Although he didn’t come away with a victory, hopefully you backed him to claim a top-10 finish or even to post a top-five result. Anyways, he’s finished T15 or better in five of his last seven events, and he ranks second on Tour in putting average (1.695) and fourth in birdie average (4.32). Burns hasn’t won yet on Tour this year, and he sits 18th in the FedEx Cup standings, so motivation will be high to improve his ranking heading into the Tour Championship for the best possible positioning. If you’re hesitant to back him to win outright, consider grabbing him to post a T10 result at around +225 odds.

Billy Horschel (+4000 @ NorthStar Bets): Horschel won the 2014 version of this event at nearby Cherry Hills and he’s riding a streak of three top-10 finishes into play this week. He finished T10 at last week’s St. Jude Championship, but his best recent result was a T2 at The Open. He’s eighth on Tour in Strokes Gained: Putting, and his 35th position in Total Driving should allow him to remain competitive on this very long golf course. He’s around +230 to post a top-10 finish.
