Best Bet to Win the Davis Cup – Russia Looks Great with Two Top-Ten Players
Going into the 2021 Davis Cup, our pick to win the competition is Russia (or the Russian Tennis Federation). Russia’s Davis Cup roster is loaded heading into the tournament.
Russia’s team has two top-five players (based on year-end ATP rankings) – Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev. The two have been stars in 2021 – with Daniil Medvedev at times encroaching on Novak Djokovic for the title of best men’s tennis player in the world – even if in our 2021 ATP Tour Finals betting preview we picked Novak Djokovic to win.
However, Russia’s roster is not a top-heavy team – they are deep. Two more players ranked in the top-30 are on Russia’s team – Aslan Karatsev (17) and Karen Khachanov (29). Russia is the only country in the world with four men ranked in the ATP top-30 year-end rankings.
While Russia’s draw does feature Spain – the 2019 winners – Spain is without Rafael Nadal. Without Nadal, Spain is still good but the edge in the group goes to Russia. Ecuador rounds out the group. However, they are the only country in the tournament without a player ranked in the 125 in the world.
Another reason we like Russia to win is Rublev, Khachanov, and Karatsev all rank in the top-100 for men’s doubles in the world. No other country has as many ranked in the top-100 in both singles and doubles. Bet on the Russian Tennis Federation to win the 2021 Davis Cup.
Sweden is the Underdog to Watch Out for at the 2021 Davis Cup
While we love Canada (as we are a Canadian site), with Felix Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov pulling out of the Davis Cup we expect someone else to win their group. That leads us to Sweden – the 14th ranked country on the Davis Cup Nations Ranking.
The other country in the group – Kazakhstan – is a quality opponent and ranked two spots higher than Sweden. However, we still like Sweden’s – as we think their brother tandem of Mikael Ymer and Elias Ymer can win them games – especially doubles.
The Ymer brothers have some previous success in doubles. The duo won the 2016 Stockholm Open Men’s Doubles – beating Michael Venus and Mate Pavic (who is on the 2021 Croatian Davis Cup team). They made it to the semi-finals at the Stockholm Open in 2021.
Mikael Ymer has had success in helping Sweden qualify for the Davis Cup. In his career representing Sweden at the Davis Cup, Mikael Ymer is 9-2. His brother is not as successful in Davis Cup qualifying – but is still 6-8 (giving him plenty of experience).
If they can get through their group – which we think they can, they will just need one of them to play well enough to win their singles match – to force a rubber match (which is doubles). If they can do that they could pull off enough upsets to win the tournament.
