The Omloop Het Nieuwsblad is the first one-day Classic of the cycling season. Held in the Flemish Ardennes, the race takes place in one of European cycling’s heartlands.
With the Tour of UAE also finishing on Saturday, the Omloop may have lost its status as the official season opener.
Nonetheless, in this professional era, it’s still a race with plenty of gravitas, which the top riders want to have on their CV.

But, with the hilly sections before the 12 km run-in, the likelihood is that if there is a sprint, it will be made up of a small breakaway group, as opposed to the whole peloton.

Belgian’s Wout Van Aert is the favorite in the betting odds. The Team Jumbo-Visma rider is just 4.50 to win. There is a significant gap between Van Aert. and the second favorite, Kasper Asgreen at 9.00.
After Asgreen is Britain’s Tom Pidcock at 11.00, and we again then see a larger gap to fourth favorite Yves Lampaert at 19.00.
There are then three riders all locked together on 21.00, Jasper Stuyven, Florian Senechal, and Sonny Colbrelli.

The young British rider announced his arrival on the scene last season by winning the 2021 Brabantse Pijl. He beat Van Aert into second place in doing so.
Supported by the might of the Ineos Grenadiers, Pidcock has already emerged as a leading name when it comes to the one-day cycling Classics.
At 11.00, Pidcock is of great value, and I wouldn’t be shocked to see him on the podium. The man from Leeds is young and hungry, and unlike Van Aert, may not want to hold himself back for the bigger-name races coming later in the Classics season.

The absence of Mads Pedersen sees Jasper Stuyven as the sole leader of the Trek-Segafredo team in this year’s race.
This also gives the 2020 winner a much better chance of victory again, as he has the whole of his team’s race tactics focussed on getting him to the finish line in Ninove first.
At 21.00, Stuyven is a great value pick.
Greg Van Avermaet Picks
Even though the Belgian rider is 36 and in the twilight of his career, he is a one-day Classics specialist and has won this race in 2016 and 2017.
