The best in the world will hit the CN Centre ice later this week for the World Women’s Curling Championship. Switzerland won the title in 2021 at the Markin Centre in Calgary and return all of their gold medal crew from a year ago. With Russia removed from the championship (they were the runner-ups in 2021), the field will be chasing the Canadians though. Other than the Russians, the rest of the final four return from a year ago (Switzerland, Sweden, and the United States) and are ready for another run at taking home the gold.

The dormant power in women’s curling, the Canadians are seeking their first world championship since they won back-to-back in 2017 and 2018. While it is not an exact science, playing in front of your home crowd could be a boost to the Canadians, especially when there were no fans in the stands during the prior season’s tournament. Also without Russia in the field, Canada could slide in as a familiar favourite from the field.
Number Two: Sweden (Odds: 3.53)
Runner-ups at two of the last three world championships (2018 and 2019), Sweden will be angling for their first title since 2011. A strong world power, Sweden will stand to benefit from the absence of the Russians and help clear the way for another showdown with the Swiss. Led by skip Anna Hasselborg, who is also the 2018 Olympic Champion in women’s curling, Sweden has a strong history of curling success at the international level.
Number three: Switzerland (Odds: 3.56)
The latest champions from Switzerland, the Swiss are looking for a three-peat performance at the 2022 tournament. After having pulled off this accomplishment from 2014-16, Switzerland has been pushing Canada in recent years as the dominant power in women’s curling. With eight overall world titles, they are tied with Sweden for second place to Canada’s 17 in the curling echelon. From their championship squad a year ago, Switzerland returns all of their key players, including skip Silvana Tirinzoni. The 42-year old has represented her home country in six World Championships and has been a part of two gold medal teams.
Prediction: The Swiss are riding an amazing hot streak and look for them to continue this trend in 2022. Look for the 1990’s Chicago Bulls of women’s curling to continue their dominance.
