Egypt is the third team in Group A, which also includes Russia, Saudi Arabia and Uruguay. Below you will find their current tournament standings, updated after every matchday.
Egypt’s FIFA World Cup Predictions
Sports Interaction has listed Egypt at +550 to win Group A, which is not out of the question but hard to imagine given that Uruguay is by far the best team in the group. Your best option is either the +125 on offer for them to make it out of the group or the +200 available for the Pharoahs to be knocked out in the Round of 16. Given they will almost certainly play Portugal or Spain in the second round, this is a great value.
Egypt is an excellent chance at qualifying for the second round of the 2018 World Cup. They have enough good players in key positions to excel against the other teams in Group A, particularly Saudi Arabia, who we believe will be the first team they beat at the tournament. While they will most likely be outclassed by a strong Uruguayan side in the first match, we also think they are a good chance against host Russia.

Egypt’s Squad & Key Players
All teams must declare a 30 man squad for the World Cup by the middle of May, while the final 23 man squads don’t have to be finalized until the first week of June, just days prior to the tournament start date. We will update you when the team sheets are announced, but first, let’s take a look at some of the most important players in the Egyptian team and who we think will play a big part in the competition.
Mohamed Salah (Winger / Striker)
Easily Egypt’s best player, Salah has hit top form over the last couple of seasons for both Roma in Serie A and now Liverpool in the English Premier League.
After a spell at Chelsea where he was rarely utilized, it was always going to be a gamble for Jurgen Klopp to sign the pacey Egyptian, and it has paid off remarkably, scoring in almost every match and heading the goal scoring charts for the first half of the season.
Salah’s late penalty against Congo was the goal that secured Egypt’s first appearance at the World Cup since 1990, and he has been excellent for the Pharoahs since making his debut, scoring 32 goals in 56 appearances at international level. While he is one of few stars in the lineup, he can certainly change a game by himself.
Mohamed Elneny (Midfielder)
Elneny was very successful at the Swiss side FC Basel and made the move to Arsenal in January 2016. Since that time he has played a limited role at the club, although the experience of playing under Arsene Wenger and alongside superstars like Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil will help both he and his Egyptian teammates when he joins the squad in Russia.
Ahmed Elmohamady (Midfielder / Wing Back)
Elmohamady has made 74 appearances for the Pharaohs dating back to 2007 and has spent the bulk of his playing career in the English Premier League and Championship with Sunderland, Hull City and now Aston Villa. If Salah is utilized on the right in a similar role to how he plays for Liverpool, these two could link up and form a very potent attack for Egypt.
The Coach – Hector Cuper
Hector Cuper is an Argentine manager who made 567 professional appearances as a centre back in the 1970s and 1980s. He has coached since 1993 and held the reigns at Valencia and Inter Milan as well as at clubs in the Greek, UAE and Turkish domestic leagues. His only prior national team experience was at the head of Georgia.
Cuper took over as Egyptian manager in 2015 and has been very successful. He led the side to the final of the 2017 African Cup of Nations and currently holds a 63.33% winning record with the national team, with 19 wins from his 30 games in charge. This is the best percentage he has obtained during his managerial career.

Egypt’s last match was the World Cup Qualifier against Ghana on November 12th, 2017. As the team had already qualified, there were a number of changes made to the side that beat Congo a month earlier.

Egypt’s FIFA World Cup History
Egypt has produced plenty of talented players over the years, yet have only managed to make two prior appearances at the World Cup. Their first tournament was way back in 1934 when they travelled all the way to Italy only to depart after losing their first-round match 4-2 to Hungary.
Egypt then waited 54 years before appearing at their next World Cup, which was also in Italy, and finished with two draws and a defeat from three group matches. Despite not recording a win, the Egyptian side was just one point off advancing from a tough group containing the Netherlands, England and the Republic of Ireland.
To date, Egypt has not managed to win a match at the World Cup, and have scored just three goals, although their current squad is perhaps the best they have put together in a long time. They managed to qualify ahead of Ghana, who have made it to the last three consecutive tournaments, and there is a great chance for the Pharoahs to pick up their first-ever victory in a group containing lowly Saudi Arabia and a Russian side that isn’t expected to go too far.
