Glory days may be on the horizon for Liverpool again. After a decade of uncertainty and mediocre results by their lofty standards, the Fenway Sports Group has seemed to find the right ingredients to build a perennial European powerhouse. Firstly and most important they hired the right manager in Jurgen Klopp, second, they have invested heavily and on the right players. Finally, they have renovated their historic Stadium, Anfield last stadium combining for a recipe of prolonged success.

In what is endearingly referred to as ‘Heavy Metal Football’, Klopp’s Gegenpress or Counterpress is a frantic style of play where the team hunt in packs to force opposition turnovers in advantageous positions to generate scoring chances.

After Klopp was able to sign 3 of Europe’s most underrated young forwards in Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah, the Reds smashed their transfer records to sign defender Virgil Van Dijk and Goalkeeper Alisson Becker giving this team a stout, dependable defensive leadership. Add to that the recruitment of several versatile, two-way midfielders and some promising young homegrown talent and suddenly Liverpool looks like the most well-rounded squad in England.

But it is not all gross spend with Liverpool as, since the sale of Fernando Torres in 2011, Liverpool have received astronomical fees for their world-class talent, allowing them to comfortably invest in big names themselves.

Liverpool is one of the largest, well-known and most widely supported football clubs in the world. The Reds are one of the most successful clubs in England with 18 First Division titles and 7 FA Cups, while their 8 League Cup triumphs are unmatched by any other English club. Liverpool are also England’s most successful club in European competitions, with 11 major trophies. Their record of five Champions Leagues is bettered only by Real Madrid and Inter Milan. Their last triumph on the continent was possibly the greatest ever comeback in the competition’s history in 2005 when they overcame a 3-0 half-time deficit to AC Milan.

However their last trophy was the League Cup in 2012, so while they are headed in the right direction making the Champions League final last season, ultimately the next step will be the winning of major competitions after such investment and promise shown.

Liverpool is a legacy franchise and has had plenty of big names to boast about. Kenny Dalglish and Graeme Souness, who both returned to manage the club, Ian Rush, Jamie Carragher, Ray Clemence and Ron Yeats are just a handful of the legends that have played for the club throughout history. And then there is Steven Gerrard, one of the Premier League midfielders of all time.

Bet On Liverpool’s Games

Since the start of the Klopp era, it’s the most efficient way to bank on this team has been a combination of Liverpool and overs.

In the 2017/18 Premier League season, two-thirds of their Premier League games went over 2.5 goals, including 74% of their away fixtures. 42% of their games went over 3.5 goals.

In last season’s Champions League 6 group stage matches produced 29 goals. 5 of them went over 2.5 goals, 4 of them went over 3.5 goals. 6 of their 7 knockout phase matches went over 2.5 goals and 4 of them went over 3.5 goals on their run to the final which they lost to Real Madrid.

The season prior, 61% of their League games went over 2.5 goals.

This team can run and gun with any team in Europe. But will the addition of an elite central defender and world-class goalkeeper put a halt to Liverpool’s tendency to play overs at a profitable rate? Only time will tell.

Liverpool has intense rivalries with a number of other clubs given their stature as one of England’s historical greats. While Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester City matches all provide quality tests for the Reds, there is no rivalry quite like their local contests against Everton. The Merseyside derby is one that literally can divide neighbourhoods and families as the teams are within such proximity of one another. In fact, Goodison Park, where Everton play their home games, used to be Liverpool’s stadium.

But the most storied rivalry in all of top-flight English football is between Liverpool and Manchester United. Historically the biggest clubs in two cities already at odds with each other, these two giants have been fighting for the title of England’s greatest club for over a century. It is interesting to note the rarity of both these teams experiencing success at the same time. Manchester United had their biggest drought during Liverpool’s golden era in the 1970’s and 1980’s, while the Reds are currently in their longest break between titles as they have watched United dominate. The retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson may prove a catalyst for the pendulum to swing back into Liverpool’s corner.
