Triple Crown Betting Odds
The term “Triple Crown” refers to a select trio of races, often comprised of events limited to three-year-olds, within a nation or racing region. Winning a Triple Crown is considered to be the most prestigious thing that a racehorse can do in its career.
The first Triple Crown winner of record was West Australian, who in 1853 won Great Britain’s top three events for three-year-olds. The English Triple Crown consists of the 2,000 Guineas Stakes, the Epsom Derby (also known as The Derby), and the St. Leger Stakes.
A total of 12 horses have completed the English Triple Crown sweep during non-war times, with Nijinsky being the last to accomplish the feat in 1970.
Odds for the Triple Crown series are often first published the year prior, midway through the summer. This is when the future star three-year-olds begin racing, as juveniles.
Keen-eyed punters can correctly project which of these two-year-old babies are going to grow into world-class phenoms an entire season later.
As was stated earlier, these Triple Crown races are usually restricted to just three-year-old horses.
Horses wishing to qualify for the Kentucky Derby – the opening crown jewel of the American Triple Crown – must compete in one or more preselected races that offer points to the top finishers.
These points races are tiered to give increasing amounts of points as the season progresses, nearing the Kentucky Derby.
This series is called the Road to the Kentucky Derby. The 20 horses who finish with the most points are the ones who earn a spot in the starting gate on the first Saturday of May.
More recently, two new paths – titled the Japan Road to the Kentucky Derby and the European Road to the Kentucky Derby – were created to encourage international participation in the biggest event on the American racing calendar.
Betting the Triple Crowns can consist of Win and Each Way bets. Winners more often than not shade toward the betting favouritism, though the longest odds to win the Kentucky Derby was Donerail at 91/1 in 1913.
The Triple Crown 2019 odds were shocked when Country House won at 65/1, though this occurred after the 7/2 favourite Maximum Security was disqualified after a post-race enquiry was lodged.

Triple Crown Betting
Betting the first and most significant leg of the Triple Crown, the Kentucky Derby, is unlike any other wagering event offered throughout the year in North America.

The second leg of the American Triple Crown series is the Preakness Stakes, competed at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland. Beyer Speed Figures
One hard and fast rule for tossing a horse completely out of the mix is a quick analysis of the runner’s previous Beyer Speed Figures. In most years, the Kentucky Derby winner will have earned a Beyer Figure of close to 100 before running in the Derby.
This was true for each of the five Kentucky Derby winners between 2013 – 2016 and would certainly hold with a larger sampling. Nyquist (2016), American Pharoah (2015), California Chrome (2014), Orb (2013) and I’ll Have Another (2012) all recorded Beyer Figures exceeding, or close to 100 in their prep races before going on to win the roses.
Fast Horses Beat Slow Horses
While horses can and do improve upon their previous speed figures on Derby Day, a horse who shows a career-best Beyer Speed Figure in ’80s or low-90’s is likely too slow to seriously be considered for a winning bet.
This is significant because occasionally such horses are among the top betting choices based on their trainer or jockey. It’s best to remember a profoundly simple adage about horse racing: fast horses beat slow horses.
