Major League Soccer has grown into one of the significant professional leagues in North America, overcoming early financial obstacles to earn a strong foothold among sports and soccer fans in Canada and the United States. Part of the reason for this success has to do with the product on the field, especially during the playoffs, when the wheat is separated from the chaff. MLS playoffs betting lines reflect the competitiveness of the league, enabled by a greater sense of parity through expansion.
For American teams, winning MLS Cup carries a greater meaning beyond the trophy, as it also guarantees them a CONCACAF Champions League berth if they haven’t been locked in by other means. Interestingly enough, this doesn’t apply to the Canadian teams – when Toronto FC won their championship in 2017, for example, their CONCACAF qualification had to come from winning the Canadian Championship / Voyageurs Cup.
Canada’s Team?
There are three Canadian teams in Major League Soccer at the moment – Toronto FC was first to join the league, with CF Montreal (formerly Montreal Impact) and the Vancouver Whitecaps following shortly after.
Toronto spent among the most in the league to make a competitive push, buying superstars Lorenzo Insigne and Federico Bernardeschi, among others over the course of the season. While the two Italians provided great entertainment in the second half and make them likely contenders in 2023, the Reds had already dug themselves a deep hole at this point.
Canada’s greatest hope this year likely comes from CF Montreal, who have had a spectacular season, locking in a top-two record in the Eastern Conference and a top-three record in the total league table. The team has gotten spectacular performance from talent such as Romell Quioto, Djordje Mihailovic, veteran Kei Kamara, Canadian national Alistair Johnson, and Canadian goalkeeper James Pantemis.
Out west, the Vancouver Whitecaps will have their season decided by the final weekend, as they sit two points back of the final playoff spot. The likes of Ryan gauld, Canada’s Lucas Cavallini, Julian Gressel, and others will look to get them over the hump.

Bet On MLS Playoffs Games
Wagering on MLS Playoff betting odds is a bit easier than wagering on regular-season games because of the fact that there aren’t any draws to worry about. Also, with an entire regular season of games played, wagering fans can get a good idea of which team is more likely to win, based on past performance stats and trends. However, some teams and players play better in the regular season than in the playoffs and vice versa. The additional attention to detail and pressure to perform causes some to wilt and others to thrive.
For this reason, it’s worth your while to check out playoff stats and trends before placing a bet on any team. The New England Revolution are a fine example of an MLS team that appears to wilt under pressure, finishing as a runner-up for the MLS Cup five times. On the other side of the coin, the Seattle Sounders have been in three finals in four years, winning two.
Similar to the geographical dominance of the western conference in the NBA and the NHL, MLS has witnessed their west coast teams dominate east coast franchises, earning the majority of MLS Cup titles. One of the only teams on the east coast that has managed to win multiple titles in D.C. United – a squad that hasn’t won since 2004. The tide is slowly changing, though; Canada’s very own Toronto FC brought the title back to the east in 2017, starting a run of four-of-five for the conference that was contributed to by Atlanta United, Columbus Crew, and New York City FC.
