About the Mariners (35-37 SU, 34-38 ATS, 34-37-1 o/u)
Offence has been hard to come by this season for the Mariners. Wednesday marked the 33rd time this season Seattle scored three runs or fewer. The team has a dismal 9-24 record in those games.
The Mariners enter this one with a team .226 batting average (28th in the majors), .307 on-base percentage (24th) and a .378 slugging percentage (25th).
Seattle will likely be without leadoff hitter J.P Crawford for Thursday’s series finale as he continues to recover from a bruised right shoulder.
About the Yankees (41-33 SU, 40-34 ATS, 32-40-2 o/u)
The Yankees rallied Wednesday without Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton and DJ LeMahieu in the lineup.
Judge has been out since June 3 when he injured his right big toe, while Stanton and LeMahieu have struggled mightily lately. Stanton is batting .196 this year and is a wretched 5-for-45 (.111 batting average) since returning from a hamstring issue on June 2. LeMahieu, a two-time batting champion in 2016 and 2020, is hitting just .232 and has been riding the pine in four of the team’s last five games.
New York is 6-8 since losing Judge to injury.
Bryan Woo over 5.5 strikeouts
-130
Bet Now!Probable pitchers
Seattle: RHP Bryan Woo (0-1, 7.30 ERA, 14.59 K/9, 1.30 WHIP
Woo will be making his fourth career start after striking out nine last Friday against the Chicago White Sox over 5 2/3 innings. His 20 strikeouts through his first three career starts are just one shy of Felix Hernandez’s team record.
Woo boasts a high-90s fastball and an excellent sinker that have been baffling opposing hitters. His 53.9 swing % and 31.4% whiff rate are both well above the league averages.
The righty has never faced the Yankees, so he’ll have the element of surprise in this one.
New York: RHP Domingo German (4-4, 4.30 ERA, 8.48 K/9, 1.09 WHIP
German was bombed for seven runs on seven hits in two-plus innings of work in his last outing against the Boston Red Sox. However, he only allowed one run in each of his previous two outings.
The right-hander is 3-0 with a 4.22 ERA in four career appearances against the Mariners. He did face them earlier this season in May and surrendered four runs on seven hits over 6 1/3 innings.
Weather
Forecasts are calling temperatures around 18C with a 40% chance of showers this evening in The Bronx. Winds will be out of the north (blowing in from centre field) at 17 km/h, gusting to 40 km/h.
Betting trends
- The under is 5-0-1 in Seattle’s last six games.
- The under is 6-0 in New York’s last six home games.
- Seattle is 4-14 in the past 18 meetings in New York.
- The Mariners are 1-5 in their last six road games.
Player prop trends
- McKinney, who has hit a home run in back-to-back games, has homered three times since being called up to replace Judge. He also has reached base in each of his last 12 games. The outfielder is +600 to go deep and -120 to record a hit.
- Mariners outfielder Jarred Kelenic has driven in a run in three straight games and has five RBIs during that span. He’s +225 to drive in a run on Thursday.
Wagers to consider
- German over 1.5 walks: -110. German has walked two or more batters in seven of his last 10 starts and is coming off a rocky outing, so he may be overly cautious, especially early in the game, with the location of his pitches. Seattle is one of the more disciplined teams at the plate in the majors, averaging 3.39 walks per game (11th in the league).
- Woo over 5.5 strikeouts: -130. As previously mentioned, Woo has electric stuff and is in position to rack up strikeouts on getaway day. New York’s bats have been quiet recently, and there’s no reason to think they’ll awaken on Thursday.
- Mariners team total over 3.5 runs: -125. Four Mariners are hitting .400 or better against German in their careers. Two of those players, Julio Rodriguez and Tom Murphy, have also homered off of him in limited at-bats. Once again, German is coming off a shaky outing and isn’t exactly beaming with confidence right now.
