Being a gentleman on the ice can net you some hardware in the National Hockey League called the Lady Byng Trophy. One of the oldest trophies in the NHL – the Lady Byng Trophy, is awarded every year to the player who best exhibits a combination of gentlemanly conduct and high playing ability on the ice.
Odds on the winner of the 2022 Lady Byng Trophy are not yet available but will open for betting when the finalists are announced during the Stanley Cup Playoffs. This page was last updated on May 23, 2022:
Who is the Favourite to Win the 2022 Lady Byng Memorial Trophy?
Jaccob Slavin finished as the 2021 winner of the Lady Byng Trophy. The NHL’s most gentlemen odds haven’t been released yet. Auston Matthews was someone people pegged to win it, but he was outshone by Slavin – though we may see Matthews as the top candidate for the Hart Memorial Trophy this year.
Finalists for the award will be announced during the Stanley Cup playoffs.
Who was the Preseason Favourite to win the Lady Byng Trophy?
Predicting the Lady Byng Trophy before the season is no easy task. While you can look at players and their history of getting penalty and attitude on the ice, one game with a fight and a minor penalty almost disqualify you from the award (and predicting guys having no games with such is difficult).
Previous winners and nominees are usually amongst the preseason – meaning Nathan MacKinnon and Jaccob Slavin may start and end the 2022 NHL with the best NHL Lady Byng odds.
Betting on the Lady Byng Trophy
When betting on this award, you need to make sure of two things. First, you need to find the players producing at a high level on the ice. The second is to find those guys producing at a high level while also avoiding penalties and arguments with referees.
Something different about this award than others is it is just about as much after the whistle as it is before the whistle. This means watching the games and seeing how players interact with other players and referees is needed to predict this award winner correctly.
Postgame interviews can also help identify who the best players to bet will win the Lady Byng Trophy. Guys who are polite and do not complain are more likely to get votes than their more vocal counterparts.
While the award is predicated on ice-on behaviour – some voters may hold off-ice incidences against a player (although they generally need to happen during that season to impact their chances of winning).
Where does the Lady Byng Trophy get its Name?
The Lady Byng Trophy’s name comes from Evelyn Byng, Viscountess Byng of Vimy. Evelyn Byng – wife of former Canadian Governor General Lord Byng – donated the trophy to the NHL in 1925. Lady Byng was a huge hockey fan and awarded the first trophy herself to the most gentlemanly player in the NHL. The trophy added “memorial” to the name after Lady Byng’s died in 1949.
