In both of their previous bouts, Shevchenko largely dominated the action. In their first clash, the Bullet held a 29-28 advantage heading into the third round before a spinning body kick was turned into a beautiful back-take transition from Grasso, leading to a rear naked choke victory to shock the MMA world.
While this is deservedly a great win for Grasso, it still shows that Shevchenko was leading the dance and was cruising to the win had it not been for one costly mistake.
Further adding fuel to this fire, Shevchenko was the victim of a total robbery in their rematch. The fight finished as a split draw, with one judge scoring the fight 48-47 Grasso, another 48-47 Shevchenko, and one 47-47. The 47-47 card was egregious, to say the least, as it scored a 10-8 round victory for Grasso in round 5, a round that was still competitive and certainly didn’t garner a need for a 10-8.
If this round had been scored 10-9 for Grasso, just as it had been for the other two judges, the fight would have been a split decision win in favour of Shevchenko.
