After a very successful semi-final run at the 2024 Copa America, the Canadian men’s national soccer team looks to build on that momentum and keep it going en route to the 2026 World Cup. That’s still a ways away, of course, so the best way to stay sharp is to schedule a healthy diet of friendly (exhibition) matches along the way.
Today, Canada will play its second friendly of the past week, taking on Mexico in Arlington, Texas. Here’s what you can expect.

Canada comes into this game with its heads held sky high, having accomplished something on Saturday that it hasn’t done in 67 years—beating the United States on its own soil.
Taking control of the game right away, it was a stunning front-to-back result for the Canadians. A great play off of an American turnover led to Jacob Shaffelburg putting the red and white up sixteen minutes in, and Canada didn’t sit back. By the end of the first half, they’d outshot their arch-rivals 11-1 by attempts and 5-0 by shots on target. In the 58th minute, Jonathan David doubled their lead. Luca de la Torre got the USA back into the game a few minutes later, but Canada held firm from that point on to secure victory.
Mexico is also coming into this game with some confidence. They won their first game following a coaching change that put Javier Aguirre on the bench for the third stint in his career. After struggling to score in Copa America, they rose to the occasion with a 3-0 win over New Zealand—their best overall result since March.
Canada’s history against El Tri doesn’t tend to go their way, but like many of their matchups in recent years, it’s been getting better with time. In fact, Canada holds the last win in the head-to-head, a 2-1 victory during 2022 World Cup qualifying known as the “Icetheca” victory in Edmonton’s Commonwealth Stadium.
Canada tied Mexico 1-1 in their home stadium a month before that. Interestingly, the Mexican team has the edge in the very specific “Canada vs. Mexico, played in the United States” bucket, most recently winning 2-1 in their matchup in the 2021 Gold Cup semifinal, also played in Texas.
Game Bets To Consider
- Jonathan David to score anytime, +290 (super-enhanced from +210) – David had one of his best games in a Canadian sweater on Saturday and has been in great form at the club level as well. His second-half goal tied him with teammate Cyle Larin for the all-time men’s national team goals record. Can he double up and claim the top of the mountain for himself tonight?
- Both Teams to Score – Yes, -110 – Canada appears to have no plan on dropping its aggressive playstyle that Jesse Marsch has fine-tuned in recent months, which gives up a little defensively but allows them more offensive looks. Mexico is working on getting their offensive footing back after a disappointing Copa America, and while the New Zealand game is a great sign, they’ll be looking to build on it. Especially with nothing to win or lose but pride in a friendly match, I think both teams will play with an offensive mind and a clean sheet either way is unlikely. If you’d like to hedge a bit, Betano also has a package bet that cashes on either both teams scoring or total over 2.5, allowing for a one-sided victory of 3-0 or greater to count as well. That comes in at -143.
